An 18th century silver & likely pewter duel lidded inkstand, or standish, on four rounded and hand chased feet. Three compartments at one side, one compartment on the other. Repair work and silver elements added late 19th/ early 20th century, including appropriate hallmarks. 2 x 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Provenance: A plaque attached to the underside of the piece is etched with the names of its owners within the Allen family from 1789 onward to Edward Heron-Allen. Included is a handwritten note signed Edward Heron-Allen, dated 1933. Heron-Allen (pseudonym Christopher Blayre) was an English polymath, writer, scientist and Persian scholar who translated the works of Omar Khayyam.

Condition
