Williams, Elizabeth (American 1844-1889), Four Figure Study from the artist's Parisian Student Period, graphite and charcoal on paper, 24.5 x 18.5 inches, Provenance: By direct descent through the family to the current great grand niece, Elizabeth William was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1844. Williams studied in Paris under Aime Nicholas Morot and, while there, exhibited at the Salon. She came to San Francisco in 1873 and during her last 16 years maintained a residence at 120 Sutter Street with her mother. A spinster, she died of consumption at the home of artist Raymond Yelland in East Oakland on July 25, 1889. Her rare works include portraits and still lifes. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1873-89; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1876-78, 1888; Snow & May's Gallery (SF), 1878; Morris & Kennedy Gallery (SF), 1880. CD; SF Examiner, 7-27-1889 (obit). This lot is an excellent example of a 19th Century female American painter. Little opportunity existing for female painters and even fewer travelled to study in France. Typically marrying marked the end of any career as a painter. in generally good age appropriate condition. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
