American folk art charcoal on marble dust, or sandpaper drawing, 1912, depicting a lakeside inn with fisherman and boaters, unsigned, dated verso. 10 x 12 inches, in a wooden frame 11.5 x 13.75 inches. Marble dust drawing, or sandpaper drawing as it is now commonly referred to, is a technique that gained popularity during the mid 1830s after a book describing the technique—The Artist, or Young Ladies’ Instructor in Ornamental Painting, Drawing by B. F. Gandee—was published in London and New York. A thin white wash of adhesive was applied to paperboard, and marble dust was sifted over it. Charcoal and sometimes chalk were used to create a drawing on the dried surface.
