Kiefer, Anselm (German, contemporary), Untitled Work on Paper - Pittsburgh Electric Pole and Hillside, Ravine Street, 1984-85, mixed media with shellac and oil over a photographic print, 23.25 x 15.5 inches, in the artist's original metal frame 26.5 x 18.75 inches. Kiefer made this work while in Pittsburgh to prepare for the 1985 Carnegie International, where he shared the first place Carnegie Prize with Richard Serra. Includes an 8 x 11 inch glossy photo of the piece signed by Kiefer (last name only) on the verso. To quote Kiefer from the 1985 International exhibition catalog, "The palette represents the art of painting… the palette wants to abolish the beauty of nature." Provenance: acquired from Lucia Trisorio, Art Basel, 1990, with original label. Ravine Street is in the Sharpsburg neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
