Music, Anton (Antonio) Zoran (Italy/Slovenia, 1909-2005) Paysage Siennois, 1956, color etching on paper, edition 32/90. Signed and editioned in pencil along lower edge. Plate 13.75 x 19.5, matted, behind glass, and in a 22.75 x 28 inch black frame. Zoran Antonio Music came from the border region between Italy and present-day Slovenia. The political turmoil of this region in the 1st half of the 20th century was to have a more or less direct impact on the artist, shaping him in his artistic work. After his studies at the Academy of Arts in Zagreb 1930-1934, he familiarized himself with the European art trends of the time on several trips to Vienna and Prague. In 1935-1937 he spent time in Madrid where, in addition to attending academy courses, he copied the works of Francisco Goya and El Greco in the Prado. In 1942 he initially settled back in his native city. Two years later he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Dachau. Due to a stroke of luck, he survived the concentration camp and in 1945 made a detour to Venice, where he lived exclusively until 1952 and then alternated with his second domicile, Paris, until his death. From 1948 Music regularly took part in the Venice Biennale and also in documenta I and II in Kassel (Biography from Dobiaschofsky Auktionen, Bern).
