Foster, Ben (Benjamin) (American, 1852-1926), Nocturne with Moonlight and Shepherd, c.1900, oil on canvas, laid down on masonite, signed lower left, 36 x 42 inches, in a newer gilt wood frame 44 x 49.5 inches. Provenance: Ben Foster Estate; Harry Eichleay Art Co.; Private Collection, Pittsburgh. Foster had at least one painting in nearly every Carnegie International exhibition from 1896 to 1925. Many of them had titles like 'By the Light of the Moon,' Misty Summer Evening,' Murky Night' and 'Misty Moonrise,' and it's quite possible that this painting is one of those.
Laid down on masonite, otherwise in generally good condition; recently cleaned, with a thick layer of varnish removed.
