Willis, Brooks (American/New Mexico/California, 1903-1981), Aspens in Autumn, oil on board, mid 20th century, signed lower right, includes a portion of a newspaper article written about the artist attached verso. Board 10.75 x 11 inches, in gilt frame with linen liner 16.5 x 17 inches. Brooks Willis was a New Mexican painter, studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Sorbonne in Paris, and the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs. He taught painting at the University of New Mexico before moving to California where he developed a more cubist style. He had exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. His work is in the permanent collections of the Albuquerque Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. This painting is likely depicting the Autumn aspens of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
