Spry, Charles Eugene (American/Western PA, 1914-1942), Spacial Elements, 1942, oil on canvas, 24 x 20 inches, Spry was a promising recent graduate of Carnegie Tech where he received the prestigious Founder's Scholarship. This painting was included in the 1943 Associated Artist's of Pittsburgh Annual Exhibition, submitted posthumously by his professor Robert Lepper. The influence of Lepper in this painting is obvious; just as it was on the works of many of his other students including Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Jonathan Borofsky, Mel Bochner and others. This is an exceptional example of advanced abstraction in mid-century Western Pennsylvania. Sadly, Spry's life was cut short when he drowned at McConnell's Mills in August, 1942, at age 28.
