Lewis, David (South African/American/Pittsburgh, 1922-2020), Dancing Animals, 1992, gouache on brown paper, signed and dated lower center, also signed and inscribed with a poem on the back of the frame, 9.5 x 11 inches, floated in a wood frame 18 x 19.5 inches. Steve says: David Lewis was like a grandfather, father, a mentor and a friend to me. He held my hand under the table while I bid for the bordello/gallery where I now live and work. South African, but of British descent, he returned to England after serving against the Nazis on a submarine chaser. He left South Africa as a political dissenter, settled, starving, in St. Ives, where he picked potatoes to stay alive. He met Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. On a trip to Paris, he was introduced to Brancusi, who after spending time with David, handed him a stack of photos of his work and asked that he write about him. Through David I met Sir Terry Frost, Gino Lorcini, Robert Brandegee, Warren Mackenzie and Eric Atkinson, all of whom showed at the gallery. David's painted folk tales on brown paper bags are reminiscent of his childhood with the native people and animals. He was also a sculpture, a renowned architect, a city planner and a CMU professor. He died in 2020 at 98 years of age.
