Sheppard, David (American, 20th century), Boston Jazz (at The Stable, 1957), c.late 1950s, color woodcut on handmade laid paper, signed, titled and numbered 11/14 in pencil along the bottom, image 7.5 x 9.75 inches, full sheet 11 x 13.75 inches, unframed. A rare print showing a quartet of presumably African-American musicians at the famous Boston jazz club The Stable, which was in the Back Bay area from the 1950s to 1963. We could not find any other examples of this print in institutional collections or at auction. Additionally, the only reference to the artist that we could find online is an April 1955 article in the Harvard Crimson that refers to a cubist piece he made titled Jazz Band, which was part of the Cambridge Art Association's 11th Annual Spring Exhibition held at the Busch-Reisinger Museum.
