Scaife, Dominique, A Penny For Your Thoughts, polymer clay, 14 x 14 x 11 inches, with COA from artist, on wood base with brass plaque. This piece was Juror's Choice Award winner during the 2017 Pittsburgh Society of Artist Guild Fifty-Second Annual Exhibition. "My pieces are created without the use of any molds and the clay skin tone is custom mixed and created by hand by me. Most of my pieces, including this piece, begin with a poetic piece of words that come together in my mind instead of a sketch. The words and story they invoke inspire the clay piece created. Words are visions for me that allow me to create the figures in clay with my hands. " Artist Bio: Dominique Scaife is the owner and creator of Kool Image Dolls® and Dominique Scaife Art. A self-taught, figurative sculptor, doll customizer and doll designer , she works with dolls, clay, and acrylic impasto art techniques, to create figures that embody her African American heritage and encourage confidence. Dominique was born, raised, and is currently practicing art and the start up of Kool Image Dolls® in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, USA. Dominique is an entrepreneur, sculptor, and storyteller who through her practice encourages self-expression and pride in identity. She uses her dolls, polymer clay, and acrylic paint impasto techniques to show details in skin tones, hairstyles, and to communicate the stories of her figurative pieces. Each piece is visual story of the culture. An open invitation to recognize, celebrate, and converse around issues or topics of current and past. Dominique has participated in Prototype PGH and Bridgeway Capital’s First Leap business accelerator programs. Dominique is also current member of Women of Visions Inc., ORIGINS, Pittsburgh Society of Artists Guild, and Society of Sculptors Pittsburgh.

Condition

Mentored by international sculptor Selma Burke at its founding, Women of Visions has sustained 40 years in the city of Pittsburgh as the only non-profit collective of African American women visual artists. Women of Visions mounts group and collaborative exhibitions, teaches classes to people of every generation, and networks to build relationships in the arts and lay community both in and outside the city of Pittsburgh. The members of Women of Visions represent a diverse range of lifestyles and artistic experiences; thus rich and varied expressions of personal, social, and political views are presented in each exhibition the group organizes. Over the course of 40 years, Women of Visions has continued to nurture and support professional and emerging women artists of color, and to bring to the general public the full richness and scope of our cultural heritage. Currently, Women of Visions is the oldest women’s organization of its kind in the country. They have experienced the years of both revolution and evolution. Now, with the country’s historic placement of a woman of color in the role of Vice President of the United States, this historic organization seeks ways to push themselves and their art to the next level. As part of their growth strategy, Women of Visions has inducted 16 new members in one year, amplified their mission with ground-breaking exhibitions, and are poised to pass on their legacy of establishing “excellence in the visual arts” to the next generation of African American women. In 2021, Women of Visions was awarded the title of “American Cultural Treasure” by the Ford Foundation and Heinz Foundation. For more information visit womenofvisionspgh.org.
