Gengembre, after Philip Hubert (French/American, 1830-1911), Western Pennsylvania Oil Drilling Operation, 1865, chromolithograph on paper, printed by Hatch and Co, New York, after a painting by H. P. Gengembre, Civil Engineer, Pittsburgh, PA, image size 21 x 27.25 inches, framed 31 x 38 inches. Image signed in the plate B. Sherman at the lower right. With a tipped-in albumen photo at the right edge showing a male figure in a hat reading the newspaper. The steam engine was manufactured by W. M. Faber and Co. of Pittsburgh. Gengembre's family moved to Manchester (now part of the city of Pittsburgh) in the 1850s. He eventually changed his last name from the unpronounceable Gengembre to his mother's maiden name of Hubert and went on to co-found the famous New York City Gilded Age architectural firm Hubert and Pirsson in the 1870s. A very rare print - we can't find any other examples of this image. Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.
