Eberle, Edward S. (American/Pittsburgh, 1944-2023), Eros II, 1996, lidded porcelain vessel. Irregular form vessel with extensive terra sigillata painting depicting classical themes, abstract sgraffito detailing, lid surmounted by a teardrop finial, rising on four squared and formed feet. Signed, titled, and dated along lower edge. 19 x 14 x 12 inches. Exhibited: One man show, Westmoreland Museum of Art, 1998. Eberle only made 12 pieces in this series, and the current example is one of the finest. Other vessels from the series can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Heinz Foundation. The theme of this sculpture is a diagrammatic or linear narrative of the history of the universe, and causal explanation of consciousness. With the origin at the top, pure intention becomes ratios, or principles of beauty, which are then subject to a quantum field, modulating into complex geometry, and pattern. According to Eberle, these are the stages and building blocks as it were, of the created experience of life. The many figures are archetypes of consciousness, conscious awareness and interaction. Provenance: The Diana Jannetta Collection. Jannetta was an esteemed collector of decorative and fine arts, known for her discerning eye and dedication to preserving artistic excellence. A lifelong advocate for the arts, she assembled a distinguished collection featuring paintings, sculptures, and craft. Jannetta was a Trustee for the Houston Contemporary Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University Art Gallery, Westmoreland Museum of American Art, was Chairman of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, and sat on the board of countless other arts and culture organizations.
