Williams, Elizabeth (American, 1844 -1889), Forest Floor Still Life with Ferns, Mushroom and Decaying Leaves, oil on canvas, 15.25 x 17.5 inches, framed measuring 18.25 x 21.25 inches. Provenance: By direct descent through the family to the current great grand niece. Elizabeth William was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1844. Williams studied in Paris under Aime Nicholas Morot and, while there, exhibited at the Salon. She came to San Francisco in 1873 and during her last 16 years maintained a residence at 120 Sutter Street with her mother. A spinster, she died of consumption at the home of artist Raymond Yelland in East Oakland on July 25, 1889. Her rare works include portraits and still lifes. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1873-89; Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1876-78, 1888; Snow & May's Gallery (SF), 1878; Morris & Kennedy Gallery (SF), 1880. CD; SF Examiner, 7-27-1889 (obit).This lot is an excellent example of a 19th Century female American painter. Little opportunity existing for female painters and even fewer who travelled to study in France. In generally good condition with some planar distortion on its original canvas.
