Peake, Elvira (American/Pittsburgh, 1929-2020), Look Into Box, hand built glazed ceramic, late 20th century. Lidded box with prism strip over a hole at side. Sticker with handwritten instructions at side, 'Hold up to light, look in hole, move around'. Sticker with artist name and title of the piece on lid. An award-winning ceramist and doyenne of the local art scene, Elvira Peake hosted clay artists from around the world at her gallery and championed art education for more than six decades in Pittsburgh. She was perhaps best known as an art teacher and proprietor of The Clay Place, an art store, gallery and studio, which operated for more than 30 years in Shadyside before relocating to Carnegie in 2006.
