Linwood, Circle of Miss Mary (British, 1755-1846), Fruit Still Life with Squirrel, embroidery, 19 x 22 inches oval, in a gilded oval shaped frame 22.5 x 25 inches. In 1809 embroiderer Mary Linwood opened a gallery in Leicester Square, London, the first one run by a woman in the capital. It featured her full-scale textile copies of paintings by popular British artists such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and George Morland, among others. The gallery, which remained open for thirty-six years, was a must-see destination in London, visited by multiple generations of the British royal family.
