Lukas, Emil (American/Western PA, contemporary), Pods of the Merry Tree, 1989, acrylic and natural additions on canvas wrapped over wood and plaster, signed, titled and dated on the versos, 36 x 14.75 x 3.5 inches and 36 x 9.25 x 3.5 inches. Steve says: Emil Lukas first came to my attention as a young art school graduate. I was immediately impressed, mostly by how big his feet were and how serious he was about his work. I know it sounds like a cliche, but I feel like a father to him. I’ve watched him marry, raise children and grandchildren. I’ve shown and sold his work and introduced him to worlds he hadn’t known before. I leant him some money for his first house; he always mentioned it. Repay me in artwork someday was my response. He did, with an incredible string painting that makes me proud for the little influence I might have had on his work. From Braddock, where his father owned a bar across from the mill, to Mendelson to New York, San Francisco, Italy, France and Uruguay, Emil Lukas has enriched the lives of those around him. Emil is the epitome of local boy does good!
