The inscription reads: To Marc Klaw, from Ernest Shackleton, in remembrance of a pleasant meeting and in the hope of sublime ---, June 1921 / When the Cruise of the "Quest" is over you shall be --- also, EHS. The recipient, Marcus Alonzo Klaw (1858-1936), was a lawyer and theater producer who was one of the 6 founders of the Theatrical Syndicate. Klaw's son Spencer married Carl van Doren's daughter Barbara in 1941. Provenance: The Klaw-van Doren family of Connecticut.
Condition
In fair condition: the spine panel is almost completely detached from the binding; boards with heavy edgewear and rubbing; there is an overall bend to the book from improper storage; inner hinges cracked, but holding; text is clean and unmarked; fold-out map in good shape; browning to endpapers.
