Slobodkina, Esphyr (Russian/American, 1908-2002), Drawing for Mural Sketch #3, 1937-1938, pencil on paper, 3.5 x 9.5 inches, matted and framed 9.5 x 15.5 inches. Provenance: Snyder Fine Art, NYC. Slobodkina was a pioneering avant-garde and feminist artist. She was married to fellow Russian-Jewish modernist Ilya Bolotowsky for a period, and is best remembered for her seminal 1940 children's books Caps for Sale. Slobodkina was involved with the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (FAP)(WPA) starting in 1936, but there is no evidence that she ever received a mural commission.
