Phillips, Esther (Russian/American, Western PA., 1902-1983), Abandoned Train car, View from the Asylum, circa 1940s, watercolor on paper, signed lower right, 11 x 14.75 inches, unframed. Phillips was the daughter of Russian Jews who immigrated to the U.S. in 1905. Her early life was spent in Pittsburgh, where she studied art with the gifted Samuel Rosenberg at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement. In her mid-30s, Phillips moved to New York City where she participated in the downtown art scene. Shortly thereafter, Phillips spent 6.5 years in an upstate New York asylum where she made some of her most popular works.
