Kleinholz, Frank (American, 1901-1987), Abstractionists, 1941, oil on canvas, relined, signed lower left, 24 x 30 inches, in a carved wood frame 32 x 38 inches. Exhibited: Directions in American Painting, Carnegie Museum of Art, 1941, where it was purchased by the exhibit's curator John O’Connor, Jr., reproduced as plate 65 in the catalog; Associated American Artists, New York City, December 1942. A New York Times article from December 9th, 1942, frequently mentions this painting as helping to get Kleinholz on the map and help launch his career (see newspaper scan at the end). Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.
