Rochegrosse, Georges Antoine (French, 1859-1938), Combat de Cailles [Quail Fight], c.1890, oil on canvas, signed lower right, 25.25 x 36 inches, in a period Egyptian inspired neoclassical gilded frame 39.25 x 49.25 inches. Provenance: purchased in Paris in the 1950s, then by descent to current consignor. Illegible gallery stamps on the stretcher bar (Pierre...). A typical Rochegrosse scene showing a Roman family from antiquity watching two quails fight, accompanied by bewildered children, allegorical figures and a third quail that was recently killed in another fight.
