Lowell, A. Lawrence, The Government of England, complete in 2 volumes, 1908, third printing, revised, Macmillan, hardcover 8vos., rebound by Bumpus of London in contemporary 3/4 blue morocco leather with raised bands, gilt titles, tegs and marbled endpapers. The set has a very interesting provenance: inked gift inscription on the front blank of the first volume from the current (at the time) United States Attorney General George W. Wickersham to his friend Weetman D. Pearson. Wickerhsham served as AG under President Taft from 1909 to 1913. Pearson, also known as 1st Viscount Cowdray, was a British royal, politician and successful businessman. In addition to the gift inscription, each volume has the bookplate of Annie Cowdray -- Pearson's wife -- on the front pastedown and a New Jersey doctor on the front fly leaf.
