Houston Gorilla Girls (anonymous collective, active 1987-1997), Gorilla in Majesty, 1988, gouache on paper, presented to Ann Sutherland Harris with original correspondence taped to the verso, sheet size 17 x 11 inches, hinged to a backing board and in a gold painted frame 30 x 22 inches. Pencil sketch on the verso by an unknown hand. Includes original cardboard mailing box with Houston Gorilla Girl return address and drawing of a bunch of bananas. The Houston Gorilla Girls were a local incarnation of the Guerilla Girls collective that started in New York City in 1985. Like their namesakes, the Houston chapter continued to draw attention to the gender inequalities in fine arts in both the commercial and institutional worlds. Provenance: from the personal collection of art historian Ann Sutherland Harris, Pittsburgh, PA. In 1976 Harris, along with feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, co-curated the Women Artists: 1550-1950 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and co-authored the accompanying catalog. The show also travelled to Austin, Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, and helped to open up the field of women’s studies in the discipline. Harris was a founding member and first president of the Women’s Caucus for Art. She wrote nine books and exhibition catalogues (including works on Artemisia Gentileschi and Alice Neel), more than a hundred articles and reviews, and was part of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh from 1984-2012. Two small repaired tears at the lower edge of the sheet, otherwise in good condition. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
