Phillips, John Campbell (American, 1873-1949), African-American Children on the Way to School, c.1900, pen and ink on paper, signed by the artist at bottom center, Drawn in Georgetown, SC to lower right, and inscribed by the artist to "my dear friend Dr. Robt McCready" lower left, sight 17 x 18.5 inches, matted and framed 27 x 28.5 inches, the recipient is possibly Dr. Robert J. McCready of Sewickley, PA. In 1899 J. Campbell Phillips published a book of 29 drawings titled "Plantation Sketches" that have similar imagery to this drawing. In addition to his postbellum drawings of Black southerners, Phillips was also an accomplished portrait and landscape painter.
