Maier, Joann (American/Pittsburgh, 1936-2025), Focus 2, 1965, engraving on paper, signed, dated, titled and numbered 6/10 in pencil to the lower edge, impression size 16.5 x 15 inches, in a black metal frame 21 x 19 inches. Provenance: the estate of the artist. Born in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Joann Maier received her undergraduate degree at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now CMU) and a master's from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her early AbEx influences were Joan Mitchell and Grace Hartigan. In the late 1950s she turned her attention to printmaking, and landed in Stanley Hayter's famous Atelier 17 in the following decade. She started as a professor in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon in 1963 and stayed for over 4 decades. In 1969 she became the first woman to receive tenure in the school's history and one of the first women anywhere in western Pennsylvania to earn faculty tenure in a studio program. She constantly challenged herself by tinkering with new technologies to enhance her creative process, including early experimentations with laser etching and inkjet printing. In good condition, with minor signs of age/handling in the margins. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense.
