Hailman, Johanna Knowles Woodwell (American/Pittsburgh, 1871-1958), Pittsburgh Industrial Scene, 1906, oil on canvas, signed Johanna K W Hailman and dated lower right, illegible pencil scrawl on the verso, 20 x 25 inches, in a modern frame 25 x 30 inches. One of the earliest depictions of Pittsburgh's steel mills by a female artist. Hailman showed in nearly all of the Carnegie International Exhibitions, and many of her pieces that were in that show from 1908-1910 have titles related to the mills. Johanna was the daughter of Scalp Level artist Joseph Woodwell. She married industrialist James Hailman in 1905. Provenance: Collection of a Pittsburgh Gentleman, Pittsburgh, PA.
