Lavalle, John (American, 1896-1971), Pair of Boxing Scenes, 1933, oil on board, both signed and dated at lower corners, 25 x 29.75 inches, uniformly framed 29.5 x 34 inches. Lavalle was a Boston based painter who got his art degree at Harvard and later studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with Philip Hale and with Jean Auburtin in Paris at the Academie Julian. He was primarily known for portraits and illustration art. Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.
