Poe, Joy (American, contemporary), One Still Uncommitted, 1982, mixed media installation, color transfer paper on 23 linen sheets with metal grommet, housed in Container Corporation of America's Great Ideas slipcase and cardboard box, each sheet 12.5 x 10.5 inches, comes with screw hooks for hanging and xeroxed sheets of Poe's statement about the piece and a list of the images she used. Titled and signed on the cardboard box. According to Poe, "This piece is a reference to art history.... I realized that the contribution of women artists had been ignored by art historians for hundreds of years... Jantzen contains not a single work by a woman." The 23rd sheet in the piece is left blank. "This represents the contribution of women artists-the 'one still committed.'" Poe was the founder of Artemesia Gallery in Chicago, a women's cooperative art gallery inspired by a visit to A.I.R. Gallery in New York City. Provenance: from the personal collection of art historian Ann Sutherland Harris, Pittsburgh, PA. In 1976 Harris, along with feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, co-curated the Women Artists: 1550-1950 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and co-authored the accompanying catalog. The show also travelled to Austin, Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, and helped to open up the field of women’s studies in the discipline. Harris was a founding member and first president of the Women’s Caucus for Art. She wrote nine books and exhibition catalogues (including works on Artemisia Gentileschi and Alice Neel), more than a hundred articles and reviews, and was part of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh from 1984-2012.
