Callahan, Kenneth (American/Seattle, 1905-1986), Crater, 1955, tempera on paper, signed and dated lower right, additionally signed, titled and dated on the verso, 30 x 22 inches, floated in a wood frame 36 x 28 inches. Callahan is one of the most important 20th century painters to come from the Pacific Northwest. Exhibited: Art: USA: 59, New York Coliseum, April, 1959, where it was lent by the Maynard Walker Gallery, original exhibition label taped to the back of the frame (plus see scan from catalog, 5th photo). Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.
In good condition overall, pinholes to the corners, slight buckling to the paper in places, some of the areas with tempera impasto have started to crack the worst being in the upper left corner; hinged to the backing board in places with old tape.
