Kuba Palm Fiber Dance Skirt, Tcaka, complete with a finished hem on all 4 sides, pom poms on hem signify special occasion skirt, base textile has sections woven with 2 different textures (very unusual). Approximately 35.5 x 275 inches. 20th century. Older skirts have fewer appliques as they were originally just used to patch holes made during the pounding process to soften the textiles. Later, the designs became more elaborate and weren't to cover holes. Provenance: From a large lot of African art purchased by a collector from a storage space buyer - see the story featured in the LA Times, 2004.
