Baskin, Leonard (American, 1922-2000), Shylock, 1963, ink and wash on paper, signed and dated lower right, full sheet 40 x 27 inches, floated in a frame 45 x 32 inches. Provenance: Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York City, with label on reverse. There is a New York Times article from January 26, 1964 in the Arts section that refers to "Leonard Baskin's Rembrandtesque 'Shylock'" in a wrap up of gallery shows -- likely a reference to this exact drawing. Striking portrait by a Jewish artist of Shakespeare's most controversial and discussed Jewish character.
