Douglass, Lucille Sinclair (American/Tuskegee, AL, 1878-1935), Canal in Suzhou, China, c.1927, pastel and charcoal on paper, signed lower left, 27.5 x 21.5 inches, in a painted wood frame 29.5 x 23.5 inches. In 1927 Douglass created an etching of this same scene titled The Crowded Hour - Soo Chow. A copy of the etching is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. This painting is likely a study for that print. Lucille Sinclair Douglass was a versatile and accomplished figure - a painter, etcher, photographer, writer, and an expert on China and Cambodia.
