Parcell, Malcolm (American, Western PA, 1896-1987), Pair of oil pastels. 1. The Naturalist, mid 20th century, pencil and oil pastel on gray board, signed top left, sight 9.25 x 10.5 inches, framed 18 x 19.25 inches. 2. Away from All This, mid 20th century, oil pastel on gray board, signed bottom right, sight 7.25 x 9.5 inches, framed 17.25 x 19.25 inches. Provenance: Zimmerman Gallery, Washington, PA. Born in Washington County, PA in the late 19th century, Parcell spent his early life studying and working in Pittsburgh where he developed acclaim as an artist, receiving the Saltus Gold Medal from the National Academy of Design and participating in the 1921 Carnegie International. Parcell did a short stint in New York in the 1920s before returning to PA on the advice of American Impressionist, J. Alden Weir, who encouraged Parcell to return home and paint what he knew. After his return, Parcell lived and worked in his Moon Lorn studio until his death at age 91.
