Newman, Marvin E. (American, b.1927), Man and Woman - from Shadow Series, Chicago, taken 1951, vintage gelatin silver print, printed contemporaneously, Newman's pencil signature and ink stamp on the verso, sheet 14 x 10.75 inches, floated in a white wood frame 16.75 x 13.75 inches. Provenance: the artist; Bruce Silverstein Gallery; Private Collection, Western PA. Born in Brooklyn, Marvin Newman moved to Chicago in 1949 to study photography with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He developed a friendship with Yasuhiro Ishimoto and began a series of experimental works in photography and film, including the Shadow Series in which he angled his camera downward on the cast shadows anonymous pedestrians and then rotated the resulting print so that the figure looks upright. These photographs were made as part of the artist's master's thesis at Chicago's Institute of Design. Other photos from the Shadow Series are in the permanent collections of the MoMA, Met and Whitney museums, among many others. They are highly desirable and don't frequently appear at auction.
