Ernst, Max, Peintures Collages Recents, 1966, inscribed on the title page from Max Ernst to Varian Fry, the man who helped him and many other Jewish artist and intellectuals escape from the Nazis in France, also with a small doodle of a man by Ernst, Galerie Alphonse Chave, number 128 of 1500 copies, illustrated exhibition catalog. A fascinating association copy. Fry died one year later in late 1967. Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, André Breton, Marc Chagall, Marcel Duchamp, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and countless others were assisted by Fry and his group, often with additional funding from members of the artistic community in New York, such as Peggy Guggenheim.
