Williams, Maynard Owen (American, 1888-1963), Citroen-Haardt Trans-Asiatic Expedition, Herat, Afghanistan, taken May 21, 1931, photomechanical print c.1931-1933, mounted to masonite, signed and annotated in blue ink lower right "Maynard Owen Williams, 13 x 18 cm., 3 sec, available light." Measures 41.5 x 31.5 inches, in a wood frame. This image was published in the December 1933 issues of National Geographic Magazine on page 732, part of Williams' lengthy article on the country as it emerged onto the world stage. Presumably, the annotated dimensions, 13 x 18 cm, refer to the size as it would appear in the magazine. Provenance: given by the artist to Herman Arens, the Executive Assistant and Secretary to the President of the National Geographic Society. Any Maynard image signed by him is notable and rare.
