A highly detailed monumental patinated Japanese incense burner (koro), likely 19th century Meiji period. High and low relief bronze in four stacked pieces. The base with three oni supporting a ring of flowering trees. The lower section with dragons in flight beneath four balustrades, the center portion with richly detailed figural scenes flanked by pine branches. The lid surmounted by a figure on a mound battling demons. Pierced banded details throughout. Apparently unmarked. 44 x 16 x 15 inches.
The figure on horseback is broken off, but is available. The hand of the figure on the lid is broken off and missing. Some flowers are broken off and missing. One small portion of a pine branch is broken off, but is available. The finial of one of the balustrades is a newer recreation of the original. Heavy surface dirt throughout.
