Desnoyers, Auguste Gaspard Louis (French engraver), Napoleon Le Grand, c.1805, engraving on paper, 26 x 19.5 inches, in a gilt wood frame 29 x 22.75 inches. Provenance: from the collection of President James Madison, the 4th president of the United States of America. Includes handwritten note, dated 1901 and with the notary seal of J. Harry Wagner, Philadelphia. The note reads: This engraving of Napoleon in his coronation robes, belonged to President Madison and to his wife Dolly Payne Madison who was the aunt of my mother Mrs. J. H. Causten (Annie Payne) who was also the daughter of adoption by Mrs. Madison from whom I inherited this picture, Mary Carvallo Causten Kunkel, affirmed and subscribed to before me this twelfth day of April AD 1901.

Condition

In seemingly fair condition with a number of rips, tears and repairs; likely laid-down; not examined outside of the frame.
