Abeyta, Narciso Platero, Ha-So-De (Native American/Navajo, 1918-1998), Deer with Fawns, undated, gouache on gray paper, signed lower right, full sheet 9.5 x 6.1 inches, unframed, inscribed on verso in an unknown hand Narcisco (sic) Abeyta, U. S. Indian School, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Navajo, Canyoncito New Mexico, Correc. Provenance: From the estate of Martha Morrill Corson. This piece was given by the artist to Corson at an art camp in the late 1930s. Martha would later graduate with a BFA from Carnegie Technical Institute (now known as Carnegie Mellon) where she shared the prestigious Martin B. Leisser Prize with fellow art student Andy Warhol. She then worked for Ketchum McCloud and Grove designing fashion figures for Esquire magazine, and continued to paint and teach in Pittsburgh. Abeyta's art career started in Dorothy Dunn's class at Santa Fe Indian School. He later was one of the 50 or so Navajo Code Talkers who were part of the Marines in World War Two.
Condition
In good condition, small loss to lower left corner of the sheet, minor soiling and handling along the margins.
