Pair of Paul Mayen (Spanish, 1916-2000) for Habitat International standing ashtrays, New York, NY, 1960s. Chromed steel or polished aluminum. 24 x 6.5 x 6.5 inches. Mayen was born on May 31, 1916, in La Línea de la Concepción, a town in Cádiz in Andalucia, Spain. He graduated from Cooper Union in New York City with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and from Columbia University with a master's degree during World War II. He went on to teach classes at Cooper Union and The New School. Mayen founded Habitat, Intrex furntiure, and Architectural Supplements, Inc. He is known for his work at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, where he designed and oversaw the building of the gift store and visitor's center. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
