Paul Evans Studio for Directional Cityscape bed frame, PE 200 series, American, New York, 1975. Polished brass tiles on wood. Canopy bed frame fitting up to a king size bed. Curtain slots along upper rails. The incised signature plate is unable to be located. 84.25 x 92 x 90 inches. This is a good example of important furniture designer, sculptor, and artist Paul Evans' later work. While designing for manufacturer Directional Furniture, Evans insisted every piece was made by hand, finished by hand, and supervised at each step of production. The patchwork design of this piece was not pre-cut or predetermined, as each piece often had its own unique pattern. Evans was a notable figure in the American Studio Craft Movement, alongside fellow artists and designers such as George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick, and Sam Maloof.
Requires restoration. Dented, scraped, with a significant amount of abrasions and accretions throughout. Some missing tiles. Warped and dented tile edges in some areas. Screw holes along each side of two lower rails. Plastic edger along the edge of one post. Some missing components to the curtain slots. Merchandise will be packed and transported by the purchaser at their own risk and expense. A list of recommended shippers is on our website: https://www.conceptgallery.com/auctions/shipping/.
