Racinet, A., Polychromatic Ornament: One Hundred Plates in Gold, Silver, and Colours, Comprising Upwards of Two Thousand Specimens of the Various Styles of Ancient, Oriental, and Medieval Art, 1873, first edition, Henry Sotheran, folio, 15.5 x 11.5 inches, illustrated throughout with 100 chromolithographic plates all in full color. Rare. Provenance: from the estate of a direct descendent of Gilbert Grosvenor, Western PA, with his signature to the front blank. Grosvenor was the first full-time employee of the National Geographic Society and Alexander Graham Bell's son-in-law. He went on to become the editor of National Geographic Magazine from 1899-1954 and the President of the National Geographic Society from 1920-1954.
Condition
In fair to poor condition: lacking most spine leather and the remainder has been repaired; boards almost fully detached; foxing and dampstaining throughout although most of the plates have escaped any fatal flaws; slight wrinkle to the top edge of most plates.
