Pressoir, Esther (American, 1902-1986), Landscape with Farm and Cow, undated (c.1940s), signed lower left, 24 x 30 inches, in a newer gilt wood frame 30 x 36 inches. A rare painting by this queer artist - her works on canvas don't often turn up at auction. Esther Estelle Pressoir was the daughter of French Canadian immigrants who made their living in the bustling textile mills of Woonsocket, RI. She won a scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), graduating from the department of painting and drawing in 1923. Settling in Greenwich Village, Pressoir studied at the Art Students’ League in New York and, during summers, with the progressive Provincetown Art Colony. Her biography was published in 2024, Esther Pressoir: A Modern Woman’s Painter, and a Hyperallergic review of the book called her 'The Coolest Artist You’ve Never Heard Of.'
