Farina, Richard, Been Down so Long It Looks Like Up to Me, signed and inscribed by the author on the fly leaf: For Virginia / - Richard Farina, April 1966, plus a small drawing on a flower. 1966, First edition, Random House, hardcover in first state dust jacket designed by Eric von Schmidt, original 5.95 price and 4/2/66 codes present on the front flap. Signed copies of this book are exceptionally rare, as Farina died in a motorcycle crash shortly after attending the book's release party on April 30, 1966. This lot also includes two laid-in newspaper scraps: one from the April 27, 1966 issue of the Carmel Valley Outlook advertising the release party of the book at the Thunderbird Shop, and the other an obituary of Farina by Stan Cloud from an unknown California newspaper. Provenance: from the estate of the folk art dealer Virginia Freeman, who lived in California in the 1960s and later opened the Virginia Freeman Art Gallery in Destin, Florida.

Condition

Good in a Fair dust jacket, dampstain visible to the foot of the spine, as well as the lower corner of the boards, also visible on the endpapers, light edgewear, top edge lightly stained, binding is secure and the text is clean and unmarked; the DJ shows heavier dampstaining in the same areas - foot of the spine and surrounding areas - light rubbing and soiling, spine darkened and stained, shallow chipping to spine ends and corners.
