Vieillard, Roger (French, 1907-1990), La Petite Chouette, engraving, 6.75 x 5 inches, pencil signed and numbered 41/60, in a black print frame measuring 16 x 12.5 inches. In the early 1930s, Roger Vieillard met the painter Jean Bazaine and the English engraver Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17, a veritable laboratory of experimental printmaking, and there he discovered the chisel that becomes his favorite technique. By 1935, he attends this workshop where he studies with Hayter and his friend Joseph Hecht.
