In 1919 Samuel Goodman was born of Jewish Parents in Toronto, Canada.. A rebel in the art world since the 1930’s Goodman was very surrealist but at the same time expressionist with consistent hints of his Jewish Heritage . After studying painting and other arts in Toronto ; he founded and organized the Canadian “Experimental Art Group” in 1937 that consisted of like minded artists as Goodman that produced art considered strange for the times (much like the performance art and neo-expressionist painting of today) and having their first group exhibition in the same year at The Art Gallery of Toronto . Goodman moved to New York in 1947, and ten years later in 1957 Co-Founded the cooperative Camino Gallery in New York City. Goodman is sometimes considered a charter member of the “New York School” of Abstract Expressionist Painters of the 1950’s having exhibited with them early on at their “Annual Exhibitions of Painting and Sculpture” in New York City , but left that circle considering it to be to commercial ; only to ; in 1958 (together with artists Boris Lurie and Stanley Fisher) co-found and create the “March Group” (which consisted of artists exhibiting at The March Gallery like famed American artist Allen D‘Arcangelo), and in 1959 The “NO!art” Movement (which was in the words of it’s founding members ; “the “NO!art” Movement occupies the strategic juncture where artistic production meets socio-cultural action. NO!art targets are the hypocritical intelligentsia, capitalist culture manipulation, consumerism, and other Moloch's. NO!art aims total unabashed self-expression in art leading to social involvement“). Since 1937 Goodman’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the world including Solo Exhibitions at ; The Granville Gallery ,Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1944 : The Camino Gallery, New York City in 1957 : Three Exhibitions in 1962 at , Art Demonstration, in New York City : Galleria Schwarz, in Milan, Italy : and Galleria La Salita, in Rome, Italy: in 1964 at the Champagne Gallery and the Gertrude Stein Gallery both in New York: And numerous group exhibitions at ; The March Gallery in 1958 : Columbia University in 1959: Duo Gallery in 1960 : March Gallery in 1960 & 1961: Gertrude Stein Gallery in 1963 (all of which were located in New York City): 1995 at The New Museum for Modern Art in Berlin, Germany : in 2001 at The Block Museum, Evanston, Illinois : and in 2002 at The Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, Iowa. After the artist’s death in 1967 The Gertrude Stein Gallery in New York City held the “Sam Goodman Memorial Retrospective Exhibition” Goodman’s work can be found in museums such as The National Gallery of Canada, The Museum of Modern Art, The Tate Gallery in London, England; and The Brooklyn Museum.
