Filner, Samuel Baer (Polish/American/Pittsburgh, c.1907-1974), Social Realist Scene, likely set in the Hill District or another Pittsburgh neighborhood, 1933, watercolor and pencil on paper, signed and dated lower right, 11.5 x 14.25 inches, matted and framed 16 x 19 inches. According to the Rauh Jewish Archives of Western Pennsylvania, Filner studied under Samuel Rosenberg at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement House’s Neighborhood Art School, at the Carnegie Institute of Technology’s College of Fine Arts, as well as stints in New York and Paris. After graduating with honors from Carnegie Tech in 1928, Filner opened a portrait studio on Centre Avenue and was an active member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh throughout the 1930s. Filner gained a reputation in his day for documenting the pool halls and gambling joints of the Hill District, but his most lasting work today is a series of etchings depicting scenes from the Irene Kaufmann Settlement House. Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.
