This copy was previously owned by Major Augustus Plummer Davis (1835-1899), a Union Army officer who was injured at the Battle of Fair Oaks and later founded the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This copy is inscribed to Davis on the title page of volume 1. Additionally, Davis' portrait appears on page 407 of Volume 1, and information about him is given on page 405. An uncommon set with excellent provenance.
