Snowden, Sylvia (American/Washington DC, contemporary), Composition 4, 1970, oil on canvas with heavy impasto, signed and dated lower right, titled on the stretcher bar, 58 x 50 inches, unframed. Provenance; acquired by the current consignor from the original owner in the Washington DC area in the early 1980s. The painting comes with a 10 page typed resume prepared by Snowden in 1980 for the original owner. The resume notes that she studied with Alex Katz, Ben Shahn, Lois Mailou Jones and John Button, among others. It also includes her exhibition history up to 1980, and lists Lou Stovall, Sam Gilliam and Dr. Starmanda (Star) Bullock, who was the head of the department of art at Howard University where Snowden got her BA and MFA, as references. A vibrant, early work, almost certainly showing the influence of fellow Howard graduate and Washington DC artist Alma Thomas.
